Possible Outcomes of Jacking In your Secure Income.
For years, I worked in the field of mental health. So, that was good, I knew what to tell people when they asked, ‘What do you do?’.
Before you jack in your job/only secure income, you should make sure you have saved enough money to cover your outgoings for the next few months, because nobody should expect to land on their feet just like that. Another option is to make sure you have under £3 in your bank account with a number of direct debits just days away. If you can also time it to fit in with the emptying of your food cupboards, you are really doing it right.
I was starting to feel pretty low, and I was experiencing something unfamiliar to me: anxiety. Luckily, I recognised it for what it was and have a supportive partner, so I knew I had to and could make some changes.
Such is life.
My god, I’ve been skint.
But here’s the thing – my aches and pains have gone, I’ve got creative, I feel more sociable and I get to mooch about in the countryside with our puppy instead of grappling with a shit train service on my way to do something I no longer like. Once all the travelling and unpaid breaks were totted up, I was on the princely sum of £6 an hour. Madness.
Money’s only a part of it, though. People still asked what I did. Kissing goodbye to my defining label wasn’t always easy. I felt all at sea and nervous. My already fragile confidence nosedived further.
After a while, I experienced excitement, an unbudgeable optimism, a sense that the world was beckoning me toward a brighter future IF ONLY I KNEW WHAT THAT WAS. I had a flimsy plan, but what life coaches galore don’t always tell you is that you need to rest. Actually…
It’s taken a while to figure out, but stopping and developing patience has made space for the good stuff. By ‘stuff’, I mean people, imagination, art, health, nature, reading, writing – this is not an exhaustive list. These are the things that mean the most to me, that support my life and allow me to feel the most alive.
Isn’t that nice?
But one cannot live on promises of love and shirt buttons. It’s a good idea to spend time researching, learning and practising the skills you need to move forward. When you eventually poke your head out from behind a book or come away from a conversation, the world will have turned a little – that’s when the right opportunities start to come around. Now you are ready to roll.
